With obesity rates among children on the rise, parents everywhere are enlisting their kids in various sports and activities that promise to decrease the odds of their children suffering from obesity. This is a great thing, as kids need the exercise. However, there are things to look out for to make sure that your kids are safe.

One of the most important things to consider is hydration. You need to make sure that your child stays hydrated not only through out the activity, but before and after. If they go into a physical activity dehydrated, they will be easily tired and will suffer from the physical realities of dehydration. Severe dehydration can even lead to hospitalization, so invest in water.

The second thing to consider is the risk of injury. Sport related injuries are common among children, and most often involve the lower extremities. Before your child enrolls in an activity make sure that you are aware of the risks to their safety. Counter these risks with proper training and proper gear. Make sure any pads or safety gear fits properly and be aware of any growth spurts your child may have that may make the gear fit incorrectly. If your child is injured playing the sport make sure they go see a doctor, and once the injury is healed make sure they have the doctors go ahead before they participate again.

Remember also, that these games are meant to be fun. If you, the parent, put too much pressure on the kids to excel, the sport might lose its appeal. Then, you will be back to square one, and fighting to get your kids off the couch. They might also push themselves too hard physically and pay the price for your pressure. As parents it is your job to find the balance between supporting and over powering your children.
